Art Therapy for People with Dementia and their carers
Art therapy provides many benefits for people with dementia. When people with dementia engage with art making they have to opportunity to experience a sense of freedom –freedom from the loss of ability associated with their condition, from the need for help in making decisions or completing tasks, and freedom from the distress associated with their condition. It also offers them the freedom to make their own rules, make decisions and the freedom to play and have fun. This can simultaneously reduce anxiety, agitation and depression. It can increase a sense of ability in the face of loss of ability which can lead to an increase in self-esteem and a reduction in depression which can occur in people with dementia.
